Joseph Malfitano

Joseph (Joe) Malfitano is President & Head of GA Group Retail, Merchant, and Industrial Solutions practice groups, where he leads the firm's acquisition and disposition activities and delivers integrated solutions to retailers, wholesalers, and industrial businesses.

With more than 25 years of experience, Joe has advised companies, investors, and other stakeholders across the retail, industrial, and commercial sectors in complex restructurings, turnarounds, and high-profile M&A transactions. He is recognized as an expert in processes and strategies required to maximize stakeholder value particularly in situations involving planned retail fleet reductions, corporate carve-outs, out-of-court wind-downs, M&A transactions, and distressed acquisitions and dispositions.

Joe brings a unique combination of legal, financial, operational, and transaction expertise to complex situations. Throughout his career, he has led the development and execution of large-scale asset acquisition and disposition strategies, helping clients unlock liquidity, manage risk, maximize asset values, and execute time-sensitive transactions.

Prior to joining GA Group, Joe held senior leadership positions at two global investment and advisory firms, where he led significant asset acquisition and disposition initiatives . He also founded Malfitano Partners, a boutique advisory firm that played a pivotal role in numerous retail restructurings in North America and Europe.

Joe's experience includes leadership roles in major transactions including, Toys "R" Us, Payless ShoeSource, Ascena Retail Group, Brooks Brothers, Gymboree, Bon-Ton Stores, Pier 1 Imports, Fred's, Avenue Stores, Charlotte Russe, Earth Fare, Things Remembered, real (Germany), Eastern Mountain Sports, Borders Books, Sharper Image, Linens 'n Things, General Motors, Chrysler, and RG Steel.

Earlier in his career, Joe practiced law with Young Conaway Stargatt & Taylor, LLP, advising stakeholders in significant corporate restructuring proceedings.

Joe holds a Juris Doctor from Temple University and a Bachelor of Science from SUNY Buffalo State University. He is a member of the American Bankruptcy Institute and the Turnaround Management Association and serves on the Restructuring Executive Committee of UJA-Federation of New York.
